Aviation Nation 2007 was announced as the capstone event of the US Air Forces's 60th anniversary and the largest Air Force event of the yearlong celebration. Under the theme "Heritage to Horizons" the Nellis AFB - Las Vegas Air Show commemorated that year 60 years of air & space power. The airshow is held annually in November at the Nellis AFB near Las Vegas and also forms the final event for the North American airshow circuit combined with the homecoming of the Thunderbirds.
Jacqueline Cochran is one of the most famous female aviators in the United States, and she was also the first woman to fly faster than the speed of sound when she broke the sound barrier in 1953. During her career she attained more speed, altitude, and distance records than any other pilot, male or female and she regularly utilized Thermal Airport over the course of her long aviation career.
2008 will be the last operational year of the unique F-117A Nighthawk. Last year 25 years in service of this remarkable Lockheed construction and an accumulated 250.000 flight hours were celebrated at Holloman AFB, NM in partnership with the X-Prize Foundation. This years Holloman Air and Space Expo (HASE) was most probably the last possibility for the public to see several F-117s before their retirement in April 2008. During the event an estimated crowd of 85.000 visited Holloman AFB.
The anticipation for this year's trip to the 35ième Fête Aérienne (35th airshow) at La Ferté-Alais was once again very dependent on the weather gods. Whereas the planned line-up for the show was once again excellent and well mixed, the forecasts were very variable depending on the source. But I didn't care about that anyway as everything was fixed well in advance and the participants lists was even more exciting.
A 50th anniversary is always something special, and when a flight test centre is celebrating it you have the right ingredients for a lot of surprises. Exactly that was the case at Manching near Ingolstadt in southern Germany when the Wehrtechnische Dienststelle 61 (WTD61) opened its doors on September 15th, 2007.
Hier bereits einige Vorschaubilder der einmal wieder sehr gelungenen Veranstaltung auf der Hahnweide. Der Bericht und eine ausführlichere Galerie sind bereits in Vorbereitung.

Held biannually at the Hungarian Air Force (Hun AF) air base in Kecskemét this air show is after the Formula One Grand Prix Hungary’s biggest outdoor event. The location can be easily reached with a one hour drive from Budapest’s airport and it is therefore no wonder that it is becoming more and more popular also among the foreign air show enthusiast –
Nicely located at the River Rhine and between the Black Forest and near to the border of France the airport of Freiburg celebrated its 100th anniversary this year. The main attraction for the enthusiast that travelled long distances to attend this event was for sure the collection of warbirds that undergo maintenance or restoration in the hangar of MeierMotors.
RIAT… Fairford... THE military air show well known among air show enthusiasts. No wonder as it is the biggest event worldwide of this kind. Due to the commercialisation of the show and the high fees that will await you there during one week-end only I have resisted to go there for a long time. But this year I finally decided to attend the biggest (and best?) military air show on the globe to get my own opinion, and experience the flair of being there.
The Salon du Bourget - or in English "Paris Air Show" - is the world's biggest aeronautical trade fair. Well known for the large variety of displayed aircraft and traffic jams all around the area the 47th edition in 2007 made no exception. After the big hype of the first public appearance of the Airbus A380 in 2005 new highlights
A formation of a MiG-29, F-4F, Tornado and Eurofighter - quite an uncommon sight today in 2007. But nearly everyday business back in 2002 at Germany's Flight Test Centre WTD 61 (Wehrtechnische Dienststelle) in Manching.
