Where? Aqaba, Red Sea - Jordan
When? April 2010

The Royal Jordanian Falcons are a small group of Professionals that represent the excellence of Jordan aviation. Based in Aqaba on the shores of the Red Sea this team and their five Extra 300-L aircraft can be seen on airshows around the world, but mainly around the Middle East and Europe.

During these events The RJ Falcons function as a highly specialized asset for the promotion of Jordan, serving as the country's "roving ambassadors". A recent visit to Jordan gave me a possibility to have a closer look at the Team and their way of working and training off season.

Consisting of five pilots, all of them having a leave of around 3-4 years from their military jet pilot job, and four full time engineers this small group succeeds in completing a dense schedule of events during the summer season. The winter and spring months, when there is a really enjoyable climate around Aqaba, is used for maintenance of their aircraft as well as training new pilots.

During one of these incentive for a new pilot I got the possibility to take a seat in the leading aircraft while performing all kinds of aerobatic maneuovers, including loopings, barrel rolls, flying upside-down, etc… - all of which are also presented in the RJ Falcons usual display sequence.

Of course I have not only been to Jordan to visit the RJF, but also to experience the unique sights and sounds of this country. Additionally to an excellent climat, especially in spring, there are so many things to see: Petra, the City of Stone, the Roman Jerash, swimming in the Dead Sea or the fascination desert landscape in Wadi Rum are only a few of the highlights that every visitor should go and see.

Here are some of my views of an excellent holiday there:

Wings over Houston Airshow

(Reading time: 4 - 8 minutes)

Wings Over Houston 2017
Where? Ellington Airfield, Houston, Texas, USA
When? 20-22 October 2017

Wings over Houston 2017 was an awesome airshow! Plenty of warbirds, a Messerschmitt Me 262, jets from the Vietnam era, amongst them the venerable F-4D Phantom II, made up for a great program. This great mix on show at Ellington Airport in the South of Houston was enriched by aerobatic acts and the USAF Thunderbirds. With a 34-year long history the airshow is still very much alive and kicking!

Shuttleworth - Fly Navy!

(Reading time: 3 - 5 minutes)

Shuttleworth Airshow
Where? Shuttleworth / Biggleswade, UK
When? 04/06/2017

The „Fly Navy“ event / airshow at Shuttleworth is a close cooperation between the Shuttleworth collection and the “Fly Navy Heritage Trust”. As every flying event at the remarkable airfield in Bedfordshire it focuses on vintage aircraft, and this time it did with a special focus on the aircraft of the Naval Air Arm. This second edition of “Fly Navy” in 2017 has put a second chapter to a young, but already successful story.

Yak-11 OK-JZE

The Yak-11 was the trainer aircraft for all pilots of the Warsaw Pact states from the 1950s up to the 1970s. To free up production capacity for other aircraft Russia decided to outsource the manufacturing to Czechoslovakia. During the 1950s 707 Yak-11 left the Let aircraft factory in Kunovice. Czech aircraft were designated C-11 (civicny: exercise).
