An insight view into an Air Force in transition was given during a sunny, and sometimes also thundery week in June by the Austrian Air Force (Au AF).
Facing a major reorganisation of the whole AF structure called "ÖBH 2010"

AuafWhat? Austria's Air Force
Where? several Austrian airbases
When? 06/2006

(ÖBH for Österreichisches Bundesheer) the future will see the disappearance of the Air Force itself as all the flying activities (and everything else involved with it of course) will be integrated as an "Air Staff" into the "Streitkräfteführungskommando" at Graz.
105 PilotAt the same time a "Kommando Luftraumüberwachung" ("Kdo LRÜ", Command for Air Surveillance) will be stationed at Salzburg to cover passive and active aerial surveillance. At the same time the "Kommando Luftunterstützung" ("Kdo LuU", command aerial support) in Linz/Hörsching will be responsible for transport and reconnaissance tasks using aircraft, helicopters and possibly recce drones in the future.
PilotThese two commands will be supplemented by the "Flieger- und Fliegerabwehrschule" ("WaGAS Fl/FlA", aviation- and anti aircraft school) in Langenlebarn responsible for the whole education of the personnel.
The visit of four airfields, namely

  • Vogler at Hörsching,
    Nittner at Graz/Thalerhof,
    Hinterstoisser at Zeltweg and
    Brumikovski at Langenlebarn near Vienna

gave an excellent overview of the current tasks of the AuAF, its lessons learned from the past and its challenges in the future.
The following pages are intended to give you an overview what aircraft are based on the different airfields of this tour and to show their role within the AuAF, so please proceed on the next page.

Wings over Houston Airshow

(Reading time: 4 - 8 minutes)

Wings over Houston 2017 was an awesome airshow! Plenty of warbirds, a Messerschmitt Me 262, jets from the Vietnam era, amongst them the venerable F-4D Phantom II, made up for a great program. This great mix on show at Ellington Airport in the South of Houston was enriched by aerobatic acts and the USAF Thunderbirds. With a 34-year long history the airshow is still very much alive and kicking!

Air Show Turkiye

(Reading time: 6 - 11 minutes)

In many places aviation Centennials are celebrated, and so did the Turkish Air Force. The official events already started in January, but cumulated for the public in the International air show, hosted at the 2nd Main Jet Base Command (Çigli/Izmir) on 04-05 June 2011. As Turkey is very secretive and restricted with everything regarding their military, it is no wonder that the spotterdays offered on the day before and after the event was soon fully booked with 1000 (!) enthusiasts wanting to attend.

HA-200 Saeta

(Reading time: 2 - 3 minutes)

The Hispano Aviacion HA-200 "Saeta" ("Arrow") is one of the last designs fully developed by Willy Messerschmitt. It had its first flight on August, 12th 1955 in Sevilla.
50 years later I have been invited to do an air-air photo session with the only remaining airworthy HA-200 in Germany. It is part of the impressive collection of the "Messerschmitt Stiftung" and operated by EADS from their site in Manching.
