Eggebek Airday

Article Index

90 years of german naval aviation and 45 years Marinefliegergeschwader (MFG) 2
...these have been the two anniversaries and main themes for the Eggebek Airday, the only open doors day of the German Air Force (GAF)/ Navy this year.
The organizers did an excellent job in inviting a good bunch of foreign aircraft for the show which resulted in a lot of nice visitors for the static and flight display and have been rewarded by about 80.000 visitors for their open doors day.

Seaking AzWhere? Eggebek - Germany
When? 24/08/2003

Atlantic StaticThe flight display has also been very good for an 'Open Doors Day' in Germany. As Eggebk is a Navy base, there have been all the Navy aircraft in the air: the Westland Sea King, the Sea Lynx, Dornier Do 228, Breguet Atlantic and their Tornados. The Air Force showed their C-160 Transall and the F-4F Phantom in flight. The most awaited item in the flight display, the MiG-29, had to stay on the ground for reasons that I do not want to mention here. It really is a shame that this wonderful plane has not been presented to the public on the last possible occasion before they are going to Poland…

Besides the participation from Germany there have also been a lot of displays from other countries. Denmark showed their 4 Saab T-17 in the 'Baby Blue'-Formation, Austria the Saab Draken and Saab 105OE, England the Jaguar and the Hawk and the highlight for many, the 'Sea Lynx Pair'. Finally the most impressive display was the F-16 from Holland with their full programm(!).

{mospagebreak tiel=Airpower_Demo}The final was the Airpower Demo with 8 Tornados showing an airfield attack with fireworks, an AWACS fly-by and everything else you can imagine in the air during a 'hostage liberation'.
Unfortunately this has been the last open day for the MFG2 as it has been decided that the NAS Eggebek will be closed in 2005. Nevertheless, you really did a great job job, guys!!!

I would like to express my thanks to Quax and Pepe and the whole organization crew at Eggebek for their job, special arrangements and the warm welcome.
And of course my girlfriend for tolerating all this ;)

SpotterTornado TatooThe main attraction on the ground has been the line of the colored Tornados of the GAF: the Tiger of the 321Tigers, the Blue Lightning, the Tiger Tornado of the AG51 and the Tornado in anniversary colors from Jever. In addition to them there has also been a Tornado of the WTD61 and a GR.4 from Great Britain. The other line-up has been the one of the F-16. The most colorful participant has been the F-16 from Belgium in RECCE-Meet special colors. The other fighters come from the USAF (Aviano), Turkey and Denmark.

Besides these there have even been more s/c: the 'Farewell Fulcrum' MiG-29 29+10 and a AMX from Italy. Another warm welcomed vistor from Italy were the two F-104S Starfighters wich made several touch-and-goes on their approach on Friday. Walking around in the static display there have been some more highlights with the A-4 from Bae/Flightsystems and a PC-9 which is also doing target missions to only name a few.
