The SU-27 Flanker, MiG-21 LanceR and MiG-29 Fulcrum are apart from being three Cold War warriors and rare Russian-build jets three excellent airshow acts that you can hardly argue about. For its 2016 edition the Slovak International Airshow at Sliac, Slovakia, promised them, and delivered! Where? Graf Ignatievo Air Base, Bulgaria
When? spring / summer 2015
The sights at Graf Ignatievo Air Base in Bulgaria are fascinating. A still typical Warsaw pact flight line filled with MiG-21s and MiG-29s, and even more Fulcrums are visible in the heat haze at the Eastern end of the airfield, ready to scramble with their live weapons for an air policing mission. But it is 2015, and these MiGs are guarding one of NATO’s Eastern frontiers.

On the same day the JASDF also decided to hold airshows at the Gifu flight test centre and furthermore at Tsuiki on the Southern island of Kyushu. For the Japanese aviation photographers this meant traveling a lot, trying to catch if possible the display training at least once at each airfield and finally deciding on one airfield for the showday. The decision was not easy, but fortunately the weather on Sunday was great at every of these three airfields.
