Where? Araxos and Kalamata AFB, Greece When? Spring 2007 Very secretive and mostly inaccessible the HAF (Hellenic Air Force / ΠΟΛΕΜΙΚΗ ΑΕΡΟΠΟΡΙΑ) possesses a very interesting and mixed fleet, including some of the most appealing aircraft around Europe – either way because of the uniqueness of the type or just because of their striking camouflage. Once the permission was given I have had the possibility to visit the airbases in Araxos and Kalamata on the Peloponnese peninsula, where I met a whole nice bunch of people who tried to organize nearly everything to get the desired photographs. |

Where? Holloman AFB, NM, USA When? October 2007 Holloman AFB hosts besides the F-177A Nighthawk equipped 49FW also the Luftwaffe's Tactical Training Center flying Tornados as well as of a permanent detachment of QF-4E Target Drones. During a trip to the south-western part of the USA gave the possibility to throw a look behind the scenes of two of these facilities. |

The annual ELITE exercise once again attracted a lot of exotic aircraft to southern German airfields in order to train electronic combat of ground and air-based weapon systems.With numbers such as 17 paticipating nations, 1500 soldiers, 45 jets, 13 helicopters and 13 transport aircraft it is no wonder that ELITE (Electronic Warfare Live Training Exercise) is the Luftwaffe's biggest exercise. |

What? ELITE Exercise Where? Southern Germany When? June 2005
Electronic Live Warfare Training Exercise Ten years after ist first edition in 1995 ELITE (Electronic Warfare Live Training Exercise) is still going strong. Organized by the German Luftwaffe this years exercise involved participants from 19 countries that are mainly based in southern Germany around the Heuberg training range south of Stuttgart. The main base for the involved aircraft is Lagerlechfeld, home of the German ECR Tornados, which hosted this year as well Greek and Turkish F-16s, Italian ECR Tornados and, for the very last time, Swedish Sk37E Viggens and a Saab 340 ERIEYE AEW aircraft. |

What? Tomcat Alley Where? NAC Oceana & NS Norfolk When? 10/2004
In the dawn of the Tomcat age, Oceana has become the Mekka of the F-14 fan community witht the airshow being the highlight of the year. NAS Ocena is the biggest airbase of the US Navy on the East coast located not far away from Virginia beach. The day after the NAS Oceana airshow I was shown around the airbase to get an inside view of the normal life on the flightline there and also had the possibilty to visit NS Norfolk. |

What? Sea Harriers Where? RNAS Yeovilton When? 07/2004
Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Yeovilton is a large multi-role air station located in the scenic Somerset. It is home to Royal Navy (RN) Sea Harrier F/A2s, RN Lynx Helicopters and RN Commando Helicopter Force. RNAS Yeovilton operates over 100 aircraft in four different categories and is manned by around 1675 service and 2000 civilian personnel including MoD employees and permanent contractors. |

What? German MiG-29 Fulcrums Where? JG73 'Steinhoff', Laage Airbase When? 08/2003
At the end of August I had the possibility to spent a day with the Jagdgeschwader (fighter squadron) 73 at their homebase Laage near Rostock. Only one month later the first 5 MiGs were transferred to Poland, so this visit has been one of the last possibilities for me to capture impressions of the jet with certainly the most unusual history of all the fighters that have ever served within the Bundesluftwaffe. |
