Piper Cub

Piper Cub D-EJGI

On a very nice summer day in 2006 I had the opportunity to have a nice photoflight with the Piper Cub D-EJGI.
After a long day of work getting up in the air was a very nice way to end the day, therefore we met with Hans, who was going to be my pilot on this flight, not very long before sunset. After the preparation of both aircraft we made our briefing, talked about safety, formations, flying directions before taking off from Manching.

The ride at the end of the day was very smooth and my aim was to get some nice photos of the Cub with Mike and his daughter Jackie at the controls. Not the usual stress that one experiences when being at an air show for the whole day, but just the same very rewarding experience. At end of the flight some very pleasing results were achieved and we had our well earned cold beer after checking the aircraft.

1149212The history of the aircraft: S/N 13204 has originally been delivered to the USAAF in December 1944 and has been used during the last days of WW II in Europe within the 8th and 9th Air Force. In 1946 it came to Switzerland via Lichtenstein and was sold from there to Austria in 1957. In 1959 the 85hp Conti engine has been installed before the aircraft was sold to Germany in 1964. There it was based in München-Riem and after some ground time it come to Oberschleißheim from 1995 until 2000. Today, after more than 60 years of service, the Cub is still flying strong and is based at Tannheim.

I would like to thank Mike very much for giving me the possibility of this very nice flight and of course Hans as well, who has been the very patient pilot of the photo platform!

(Reading time: 4 - 8 minutes)

Wings Over Houston 2017
Where? Ellington Airfield, Houston, Texas, USA
When? 20-22 October 2017

Wings over Houston 2017 was an awesome airshow! Plenty of warbirds, a Messerschmitt Me 262, jets from the Vietnam era, amongst them the venerable F-4D Phantom II, made up for a great program. This great mix on show at Ellington Airport in the South of Houston was enriched by aerobatic acts and the USAF Thunderbirds. With a 34-year long history the airshow is still very much alive and kicking!

CAF Airsho 2014

Where? Midland, Tx, USA
When? 11-12/10/2014

Looking to the horizon around Midland the width of the Texan landscape is interrupted by oil pumps, and with the sweetish smell of oil also the smell of the money lies in air. High above a stairway of clouds leads from the horizon into the big blue, proudly supported by the clear air of the Texan sky. Historic bombers and warbird fighters would soon sneak through those skies, giving plenty of photogenic topside passes for the Airsho crowd.
