RNAS Yeovilton
 Royal
Naval Air Station (RNAS) Yeovilton is a large multi-role air
station located in the scenic Somerset.
It is home to Royal Navy (RN) Sea Harrier F/A2s, RN Lynx
Helicopters and RN Commando Helicopter Force. RNAS Yeovilton
operates over 100 aircraft in four different categories and
is manned by around 1675 service and 2000 civilian personnel
including MoD employees and permanent contractors.
Training of aircrew and engineers of resident aircraft types
is also carried out at Yeovilton. It is also the location
for the RN Fighter Controller School, training surface based
aircraft controllers.
899 Naval Air Squadron
 899
Naval Air Squadron (NAS) is the largest of the Royal Navy’s
Fighter Squadrons and is the Operational Conversion Unit for
the Sea Harrier Force. Based at RNAS Yeovilton in Somerset,
the primary task of the Squadron is to train pilots and engineers
in the intricacies of the modern F/A2 jet.
The F/A2 is charged with providing Air Defence for the Fleet
at sea and has the secondary roles of reconnaissance, strike
and close air support. The aircraft is equipped with Blue
Vixen multi-role Pulse Doppler Radar, and is armed with the
advanced medium range air-to-air missile (AMRAAM), making
it one of the world’s most potent naval fighters.
Before the Sea Harriers (SHARs) are being retired I have
had the possibility to get an inside look into the daily activites
of RNAS Yeovilton and photograph the daily training routines
with the SHARs.
 If
you are planning a visit to Yeovilton and want to see F/A2s
you should hurry as they will be replaced in the near future
by GR.7 Harriers. Nevertheless you should stop there and pay
a visit to the excellen the Fleet
Air Arm Museum which even offers a look on the helicopter
flightline from inside the museum.
